Unique Online Certificate in International Communication Regulation and Policy to Welcome Participants from Around the World

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 21, 2015 - American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) and the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO) will jointly offer a new Online Certificate in Basic Principles of International Communication Regulation and Policy, part of the Program on International Communication Regulation and Policy.

Using advanced web-based technology, participants can earn the certificate from anywhere in the world. The corresponding online course, “Basic Principles of International Communications Regulation and Policy,” will be held March 16-May 29. 

Through self-paced coursework and online lectures by world-renowned professionals in the field, the course explores current and emerging issues in communications policy and regulation, including licensing, competition, and universal access and service and internet issues. Participants will:

  • Acquire working knowledge of the legal principles of national and international telecommunications laws and frameworks.
  • Become familiar with all the major international and regional players in information and communications technology (ICT) and international communications.
  • Learn how ICTs and telecommunications technologies are important to the international development agenda.
  • Learn key strategies for financing ICT and telecommunications infrastructure.

Faculty for the course include Renata Brazil David, head of the Program on International Communications Regulation and Policy and director of legal Affairs for ITSO, and Sofie Maddens, adjunct professor and head of Regulatory and Market Environment for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Development Bureau. Guest lectures will be provided by Jose Toscano, director general, ITSO; Patrick Masambu, director of technical affairs, ITSO; Francois Rancy, director, ITU Radiocommunication Bureau and other distinguished members of the advisory board of the Program on International Communications Regulation and Policy.

This course is the first offered by the Program on International Communications Regulation and Policy. Other forthcoming courses in the program include “International Communications Law: A Comparative Perspective” (Summer 2015), and “International Communications Regulation and Policy” (Fall 2015).
