American University Washington College of Law Partners with Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute for "Making a Difference: Serving on Nonprofit Boards"

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 21, 2014 – American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) is pleased to partner with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) in the development of the leadership and board governance training seminar, “Making a Difference: Serving on Nonprofit Boards.”
The seminar is designed specifically for the 2014-15 CHCI Graduate Fellows. CHCI’s fellowship program provides exceptional Latino college graduates from across the country with unparalleled exposure to professional experience in the public policy arenas of education, health, housing, law, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This year’s fellows are established young professionals with placements in the executive and legislative branches, federal agencies, and nonprofit, civil rights, and professional organizations.
“This partnership presents a unique opportunity to build on the law school’s commitment to public service and social responsibility as well as its strong ties to the Hispanic community,” said Claudio Grossman, dean of American University Washington College of Law.
The seminar, which consists of four sessions, builds on and complements the nationally acclaimed leadership development training program currently offered by CHCI. It includes sessions designed to explore the fundamentals of governance as it relates to nonprofit organizations and emphasizes the importance of civic engagement in our communities. The program will launch on Friday, Nov. 21, and will provide insights, training, and skills development on the topics of inter alia leadership, nonprofit governance, and board dynamics. Featured speakers include:
- Mickey Ibarra, founder, Latino Leaders Network and President, Ibarra Strategy Group
- Peter Wolk, founder and executive director, National Center for Nonprofit Law
- Vernetta Walker, vice president of programs and chief governance officer, BoardSource
This program joins the law school's numerous other initiatives geared toward the Hispanic community and Spanish speakers. The law school offers courses in Spanish, including courses in human rights and a Legal Spanish program, and has extensive networks of agreements and exchanges with universities in Latin America and Spain. The law school also enrolls a high number of Hispanic students each fall and has a recognized reputation of being of among the top law schools for Hispanics in the country, despite not being located in a location known for its Hispanic population.
