American University Washington College of Law Furthers Reach through Specialized Online Programs

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 1, 2013 – American University Washington College of Law is proud to announce the addition of online learning capabilities, starting with programs in Advanced Legal Research Studies and International Commercial Arbitration.
“American University Washington College of Law has prided itself on providing excellent educational opportunities to attorneys and students around the world for decades, especially through our renowned international programs,” said Dean Claudio Grossman. “Adding an online component will only serve to enhance these offerings, and expand the law school’s global connections.”
Directed by Glenn Greenberg, the AUWCL Office of Online Education has selected a comprehensive learning technology platform partnering with Desire2Learn® to spearhead its new online capabilities. The goal of the program is to enable the law school’s educational offerings to be available to a worldwide audience, anytime anywhere. The Online Certificate Program on International Commercial Arbitration will be taught by experienced practitioners, including AUWCL Distinguished Practitioner-in-Residence, Horacio Grigera-Naón, a former Secretary General of the International Court of Arbitration, Professor Perry Wallace, and Adjunct Professors Björn Arp and Renata Brazil David. This will give participants unique access to experts from any place in the world.
The Online Certificate Program on International Commercial Arbitration consists of two courses and will provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key topics in the fields of commercial arbitration and its relevance in business law. Through self-paced activities and collaboration with participants from around the world, as well as access to AUWCL world-renowned practitioners, this program will provide participants with a fundamental foundation in International Commercial Arbitration and the business law concepts that are central to it using state of the art learning technology.
The Advanced Legal Research Studies course, taught by Associate Dean Billie Jo Kaufman and Professor Amy Taylor, first offered this past June, covers substantive legal research topics such as administrative law, income tax, labor and employment, and international law research resources. Students receive advanced legal database training and learn cost effective legal research strategies in a highly engaging learning experience.
These innovative programs will take advantage of education technology tools integrated into a seamless learning experience, allowing participants to collaborate with faculty and peers around the globe.
“The online learning environment is highly flexible and tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the subject matter being taught,” said Greenberg, who joined the AUWCL administration in 2012. “Course content is carefully and expertly designed to meet learning objectives and program goals at Washington College of Law by incorporating a range of learning activities including academic readings, exercises, case studies, presentations, high quality lectures, and discussions that enhance critical thinking.” “Teaching through an online environment allows for conforming to the individual teaching style of each of the specialized faculty.”
In addition, participants are able to access course resources on the cloud and collaborate and communicate with their peers and professors using an integrated messaging and live virtual classroom experience.
