Harold Koh, Legal Adviser to the Department of State and Renowned Expert on International Law, to Deliver Important Keynote Address at AUWCL

Presentation on “International Criminal Justice 5.0.” to Take Place Sept. 7

Washington, D.C., Sept. 5, 2012 – American University Washington College of Law is pleased to welcome Harold Koh, legal adviser to the U.S. Department of State and renowned expert in international law for an important keynote address, “International Criminal Justice 5.0.” The event will take place Friday, Sept. 7 at noon in the law school’s sixth floor student lounges.

“Harold Koh is one of the most important international legal personalities of our time,” said Claudio Grossman, dean of American University Washington College of Law, who will give opening remarks at the event. “This is a very significant and exciting opportunity for everyone in the law school community to benefit from his insights and experience.”

Harold Koh, legal adviser of the Department of State since June 2009, is a leading expert on international law. Since 1985 he has taught at Yale Law School, where he is the Martin R. Flug ’55 Professor of International Law (on leave) and where he served for five years as dean. From 1998 to 2001, Koh served as assistant secretary of state for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. A Marshall Scholar, Koh graduated from Harvard, Oxford, and Harvard Law School, clerked for Judge Malcolm Wilkey of the D.C. Circuit, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, and worked in private practice and at the Justice Department.

Koh has received 11 honorary degrees and more than 30 awards for his lifetime achievements in human rights and international law. He has authored or co-authored eight books, published more than 170 articles, testified often before Congress, and litigated numerous cases involving international law. A fellow of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council of the American Law Institute, he has served on the boards of the American Journal of International Law, Harvard University, the Brookings Institution, and Human Rights First.
