Ford Foundation Awards Grant to American University Washington College of Law to Work in Sexuality and Gender Initiatives in Latin American Law Schools
Generous Grant to Support the ALAS Network
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 10, 2012 - American University Washington College of Law is pleased to be the recipient of a generous grant from The Ford Foundation. The $140,000 grant will support the work of law professors in Latin America who are part of the Network of Latin American Scholars (ALAS).
The Ford Foundation has supported the ALAS Network since 2004. ALAS aims to mainstream gender and sexuality in Latin American legal education, with the final goal of graduating attorneys and judges with knowledge on women and LGBTI rights. The network achieves this goal through generating teaching materials for law schools, carrying out research, and planning academic activities for the promotion of justice, sexuality, and reproductive rights of women and sexual minorities.
“This new grant of $140,000 will be used to organize workshops on gender and sexuality for Latin American law professors and judges, and prepare online classes and teaching materials on gender violence and sexual and reproductive rights,” said Macarena Saez, fellow in the law school’s International Legal Studies Program, and member of the ALAS Executive Committee.
