Over 150 Employers Attend Annual Externship Fair

More than 150 employers registered to attend the annual WCL Externship Fair, held Jan. 21 at American University Washington College of Law.

The Fair provides AUWCL students with the opportunity to meet with a variety of organizations seeking externs for the summer, spring, and fall semester.

"I was thrilled with the wonderful turnout we had for this year's Externship Fair," said Avis Sanders, director of the Externship Program. "We had 155 externship employers register for the Fair--an all-time record. The more than 400 students who attended were able to meet with a wide array of attorneys, including about 50 AUWCL alumni. It was a great opportunity for students to learn about legal opportunities in the Washington, D.C. area, network with attorneys in a variety of practice areas, and informally interview for internships and externships."

The Fair was organized by practice area, including business and finance, administrative law, criminal defense and prosecution, immigration and employment law, and a wide variety of civil rights and public interest organizations including those focusing on education, the environment, civil rights, veterans’ benefits, domestic violence, reproductive rights, election law, juvenile justice and more.

Specific government employers included nine offices from the U.S. Department of Justice, four offices from Homeland Security and three from the U.S. Department of Labor. Some of the not-for-profit organizations include the Children’s Defense Fund, FINRA, the Public Defenders’ Service of D.C., and Neighborhood Legal Services.

"It was a good experience," said Jorge Sanchez, a first-year student who attended the fair. "It's nice to be able to talk to employers face-to-face and personally give someone your resume."
