Dear Washington College of Law Community,
I am thrilled to announce that our law school will welcome United States Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch as our 2016 Commencement speaker.
The law school’s commencement will be held Sunday, May 22, and Attorney General Lynch will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree at the ceremony.
Lynch was sworn in as the 83rd Attorney General of the United States by Vice President Joe Biden on April 27, 2015. President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate Lynch on November 8, 2014. She is the first African-American woman and only the second woman to hold the position of Attorney General of the United States.
For a law school founded by women more than 120 years ago, with a recent entering class profile of more than 60% women, she is the perfect role model for all our graduates.
Lynch received her A.B., cum laude, from Harvard College in 1981, and her JD from Harvard Law School in 1984. In 1990, after a period in private practice, she joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, located in Brooklyn, New York. There, she forged an impressive career prosecuting cases involving narcotics, violent crimes, public corruption, and civil rights. Full bio.
