FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC, May 16, 2016 – American University Washington College of Law will welcome Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch as its 2016 Commencement speaker. The law school's commencement will be held Sunday, May 22, 2016, at 1 p.m. at American University's Bender Arena (4400 Massachusetts Ave., NW). In the Spring 2016 class, 394 students will graduate with a Juris Doctor (JD), 65 with a Master of Laws (LL.M.), and one with a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD).

As part of the ceremony, Attorney General Lynch will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws by American University President Neil Kerwin, Provost Scott Bass, and Dean Claudio Grossman.

“The American University Washington College of Law community is honored to have Attorney General Lynch join us for this momentous occasion as we celebrate our newest alumni,” said Dean Grossman. “For a law school founded by women more than 120 years ago, with a recent entering class profile of more than 60% women, the Attorney General is the perfect role model for all our graduates.”

Lynch was sworn in as the 83rd Attorney General of the United States by Vice President Joe Biden on April 27, 2015. President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate Lynch on November 8, 2014. She is the first African-American woman and only the second woman to hold the position of Attorney General of the United States.

Lynch received her A.B., cum laude, from Harvard College in 1981, and her JD from Harvard Law School in 1984. In 1990, after a period in private practice, she joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, located in Brooklyn, New York. There, she forged an impressive career prosecuting cases involving narcotics, violent crimes, public corruption, and civil rights.
