Program on International Organizations, Law & Diplomacy Welcomes Participants to Intensive Programs in DC & Geneva
Unique Summer Opportunity Boasts Specialized Curricular Offerings and High-Profile Guest Lecturers

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 28, 2013 - The Program on International Organizations, Law and Diplomacy (PIOLD) at American University Washington College of Law welcomes its third class of students to its renowned summer program, with courses in Washington D.C. and Geneva.
Since the Program’s launch in 2011 PIOLD has tripled participation in the Geneva program as well as held eight Distinguished Speaker Series events at AUWCL. This unique Program covers international organizations from political, juridical, economic, and social perspectives. The theory and practice of contemporary international organizations, law and diplomacy is taught through courses, conferences, and experiential learning with international organizations in Washington and Geneva.
The Geneva program is especially unique in that courses are hosted or have substantial activities in the headquarters of the international organizations themselves.
“Students have the opportunity to learn an incredible amount from knowledgeable professors and guest lecturers,” said Carlos Portales, director of the program. “When a course focuses on a particular organization or subject area, there are often guest lecturers from those organizations leading discussions with each class. The inside view of the work of the organizations and the networking opportunities are outstanding.”
This year there will be four courses (trade, labor, intellectual property, and human rights) prepared with the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Labor Organization (ILO), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy as well as the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) plus lecturers from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The course on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law will be taught with high officials from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and several additional prominent non-governmental organizations in the field.
The summer program in Washington and Geneva is open to participants from American University Washington College of Law and other AU graduate schools, as well as to U.S. and international students from other law and graduate schools, officials from international organizations, and individuals working for governments or in the private sector.
