American University Washington College of Law Announces Valerie Jarrett as 2012 Commencement Speaker

Washington, DC, May 11, 2012 - American University Washington College of Law will welcome Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to President Barack Obama, as the Spring 2012 commencement speaker. The law school's graduation will take place May 20, 2012, at 1 p.m at at American University's Bender Arena (4400 Massachusetts Ave., NW).
"We are pleased to have such a senior member of the White House staff join us for spring commencement," said Dean Claudio Grossman. "Ms. Jarrett chairs the White House Council on Women and Girls and is a wonderful role model for our community."
Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Jarrett was the Chief Executive Officer of The Habitat Company. She also served as co-chair of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team, and senior advisor to Obama's presidential campaign.
Jarrett has held positions in both the public and private sector, including the chairman of the Chicago Transit Board, the commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago, and deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard M. Daley. She also practiced law with two private law firms. Jarrett received her B.A. from Stanford University in 1978 and her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981.
In the Spring 2012 graduating class, 437 students will be earning their Juris Doctor (JD), 78 graduating with a Master of Laws (LL.M.), and 2 with a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD).
