Law School Hosts 12th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration

WASHINGTON, DC, January 20, 2011 – American University Washington College of Law is proud to host the 12th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration Program on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Office of Diversity Services.

The event will feature a keynote address by Associate Professor Lia Epperson, who joined the faculty of American University Washington College of Law prior to the fall 2010 semester.  Epperson is an expert in civil rights law. Prior to joining the law faculty at American, she was a faculty member at Santa Clara University, and served as a visiting professor at the University of Maryland. Epperson’s research interests are informed by her experiences litigating education cases throughout the country, and lobbying for the maintenance and enforcement of civil rights protections

In addition to Epperson’s speech, there will be a community reading of excerpts from Dr. King’s 1964 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, led by Walter Crawford of Faculty and Administrative Support Services.   A special presentation will be made to Professor Candace Kovacic-Fleischer in honor of her pending retirement.  A reception for all attendees will follow.  Non-perishable food items will be collected for donation to Martha’s Table.
