Hispanic Law Conference Will Focus on Challenge of Immigration

WASHINGTON, DC, February 26, 2010 – American University Washington College of Law will host the Thirteenth Annual Hispanic Law Conference, held each spring as part of the law school’s Founders’ Celebration.
“We are proud to work to co-sponsor annually this important conference with The Hispanic National Bar Association, The Hispanic Bar Associations of DC, Maryland, and Virginia, LaLSA, and LAAW” said Claudio Grossman, Dean of the American University Washington College of Law. “The conference has become an important forum for the promotion of issues that affect the Latino community, both nationally and internationally.”
The conference is the most important event for the law school’s Latino community, bringing together a unique mix of personalities devoted to the progress of Latinos/as in the U.S. and in the hemisphere.
Prior to the conference, the law school is hosting a mentoring program for Latino/a high school students interested in a post-secondary education and a career forum for law students. (see schedule below)
The program will connect law students with representatives in the private, public, and non-profit sectors, followed by a panel discussion on immigration and the Obama Administration. There will be a reception for the LAAW board, followed by the awards dinner portion of the event, which will feature awards presented to those individuals who have significantly contributed to the progress of the Latino community.
The Hispanic Law Conference is co-sponsored by The Hispanic National Bar Association, The Hispanic Bar Associations of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, WCL’s Latino/a Law Students’ Association (LaLSA), and The Latino/a Alumni Association of the Washington College of Law (LAAW).

American University Tour: Exploring Campus Life @ AU
An opportunity for local area high school students to receive a full college tour of American University and learn more about the needs and demands of getting a college education.
4:00-5:00 p.m.
Mentor Table Talk
Mentor Table Talk offers JD and LL.M. students the opportunity to network with representatives of organizations in the private, public, and non-profit sectors who will share their experiences and career paths.
5:10-6:45 p.m.
Immigration Reform: A Dialogue
This panel will discuss the impact the new administration has had on immigration.
