Deputy Attorney General David Ogden to Make First Public Appearance After Stepping Down

Ogden’s remarks will focus on the restoration of the Department of Justice after Obama’s first year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC, March 18, 2010 – Former Deputy Attorney General David Ogden will make his first public appearance after stepping down from his position with the Department of Justice, at an American University Washington College of Law forum on March 23.  Ogden led the Department of Justice transition team after the election of President Obama, and resigned as Deputy Attorney General in February of this year.

When the Obama Administration came to Washington, the Department of Justice was embroiled in charges that it: allowed political affiliations to infect law enforcement decisions and the firing of attorneys, failed to enforce laws on civil rights and the environment, endorsed an expansive view of Executive power to justify torture, and invoked the state secrets privilege to block litigation seeking accountability.

Ogden’s remarks will focus on the Obama Administration’s agenda for reform and restoration of the Justice Department, the progress made on achieving those goals during the first year of the Administration, and the outlook for the future.

His talk will be followed by an interview of Mr. Ogden by Professor Daniel Marcus of American University Washington College of Law, who served with Mr. Ogden in the Clinton/Reno Justice Department.

The event is on Tuesday, March 23, from 12 – 1:30 p.m. at American University Washington College of Law, 4801 Massachusetts Ave. NW, in room 603.  The event is sponsored by Program on Law and Government.
