Three Washington College of Law Alumni Selected as Equal Justice Works Fellows
American University Washington College of Law congratulates the 25th class of Equal Justice Works (EJW) Fellows, including three alumni from the Washington College of Law. Ann Garcia ’17, Whitney Washington ’17, and Nicholas Steiner ’15 will join 74 other recent law school graduates who will spend the next two years working to provide legal services to low-income and underserved populations. The newest class of Fellows will work across the nation to serve communities of veterans, immigrants, people with disabilities, refugee children, and more. With partnerships from sponsor organizations, including law firms and corporations, Equal Justice Works is able to fund hundreds of public interest attorneys each year to close the justice gap on issues such as foreclosure, community economic development, immigration, civil rights, homelessness, access to healthcare, and domestic violence.
Equal Justice Works is dedicated to creating a just society by mobilizing the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice by providing opportunities for law students and lawyers that provide training and skills that enable them to provide effective representation to underserved communities and causes.
2017 EJW Fellows from Washington College of Law
Ann Garcia – Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) (Fort Worth, Tex.)
Ann will provide free, bilingual, and culturally sensitive immigration legal aid and advocacy for transgender individuals detained at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Tex.
Whitney Washington – Transgender Law Center (Oakland, Calif.)
Whitney will help create the infrastructure to address sexual abuse faced by incarcerated transgender and gender non-conforming people through legal advocacy, documentation of experiences, and impact litigation.
Nicholas Steiner – American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland (Baltimore)
Nick will provide legal assistance and advocacy support to immigrant communities by challenging police misconduct and illegal targeting of immigrants.
