Students Kick Off Orientation with Community Service Projects

On August 18, 2015 American University Washington College of Law welcomed incoming students with its annual public day of service – In My Back Yard (IMBY)

Every year before classes begin, law students, faculty, and staff get together to participate in community service projects around Washington, D.C. area. IMBY is organized by the school’s rising 2L Public Interest/Public Service Scholars and other public interest student leaders.

Participation in IMBY counts toward the law school’s Pro Bono Honors Pledge Program, which recognizes the voluntary work undertaken by students while at the law school on behalf of low-income and underrepresented populations or for the public good.

“AUWCL is deeply committed to the service of others and to advancing the causes of underprivileged and underrepresented people,” says Jasmeet Kaur Sidhu, assistant director for the Office of Public Interest and one of the event organizers. “We strive to instill in our students the importance of service, pro bono representation, and community involvement from the moment they set foot on our campus. It is our hope that they remain committed to this vital work throughout their lives.”
