Dean Camille Nelson Welcomes First Class to Begin 1L Year at New Tenley Campus

First-Year Diversity Day Welcome Reception in the Capital Atrium.

From Aug. 17-19, American University Washington College of Law held orientation for full- and part-time students, welcoming them as the newest members of the law school community. Dean Camille Nelson gave welcoming addresses to both cohorts, encouraging the school’s newest students to “think expansively about all that a law degree has to offer – be entrepreneurial, innovative, and creative…and use your legal education as a springboard to opportunities in the law and beyond.”

This year’s orientation activities featured a number of activities that introduced students to the many opportunities available at the law school. This included a diversity reception sponsored by the Office of Diversity Services and the ALSAs, a required session on financial aid, a student organizations fair, and the opportunity to meet their first-year sections.

Among other things, in her opening remarks, Dean Nelson stressed wellness and balance.

“To maintain your balance you must stay connected, don’t sacrifice the relationships or activities that sustain you,” she said.  “Sometimes it may seem impossible, but maintaining a sense of balance means continuing to center yourself and to make meaningful time for your family, loved ones, partners, and communities.”

“My wish for you is that you embrace, and hopefully enjoy, law school,” she said.

David Jaffe, dean of students, whose office oversaw orientation, also emphasized the importance of taking care of oneself.  Jaffe participated in a mindfulness session attended by 140 entering students and shared that mindfulness and yoga sessions would be among the offerings available to students during the academic year.
