American University Washington College of Law Partners with Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute on Board Leadership Initiative

American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) is pleased to again partner with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) on the development of the CHCI Board Leadership Initiative, which focuses on leadership and board governance.

The seminar is designed specifically for the 2015-16 CHCI Graduate Fellows – exceptional Latino college graduates from across the country with unparalleled exposure to professional experience in public policy arenas.  This year’s fellows are established young professionals with placements in the executive and legislative branches, federal agencies, and nonprofit, civil rights, and professional organizations.  The initiative endeavors to increase the pipeline of trained and experienced Latino leaders ready to serve on nonprofit boards.

“We value tremendously the opportunity to partner with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in promoting leadership in the Hispanic community,” said AUWCL Dean Claudio Grossman. “Our law school is renowned for its commitment to diversity, and we will continue to promote opportunity for all through our academic endeavors, unique partnerships, and specialized programs.”

The seminar, which consists of three sessions, builds on and complements the nationally acclaimed leadership development training program currently offered by CHCI.  It includes sessions designed to explore the fundamentals of governance as it relates to nonprofit organizations and emphasizes the importance of civic engagement in our communities.  The program launches Friday, Dec. 4, providing insights, training, and skills development on the topics of nonprofit governance and board leadership with a focus on the Hispanic community.  Featured speakers include:

  • Cristina Antelo, Interim President & CEO, CHCI and Principal, Podesta Group
  • Ana Gonzalez-Barrera, Research Associate, Pew Research Center
  • Peter Wolk, The Law Office of Peter Wolk
  • William R. Gil, Vice President, Programs, CHCI
  • Aarón E. Almada, Manager, Philanthropy & Strategic Engagement, CHCI
  • Miryam C. Gerdine, Acting Branch Chief, Division of Advanced Nursing and Education, Bureau of Health Workforce, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services
  • Susan I. Santana, Assistant Vice President, Federal Relations, AT&T
  • Cid Wilson, President and CEO, Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility

This program joins the law school's numerous other initiatives geared toward the Hispanic community and Spanish speakers. The law school offers courses in Spanish, including courses in human rights and a Legal Spanish program, and has extensive networks of agreements and exchanges with universities in Latin America and Spain. The law school also enrolls a high number of Hispanic students each fall and has a recognized reputation of being among the top law schools for Hispanics in the country, despite not being located in an area known for its Hispanic population.
