“The world need champions, the world needs you,” Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch told the American University Washington College of Law class of 2016 on Sunday during her commencement address. The Attorney General, who received an honorary doctor of laws degree from AUWCL as part of the ceremony, gave a hopeful speech, encouraging the class to face the choices ahead.

“What impresses me most about this class – as well as so many WCL grads who have come before you – is that out of all the choices you had to apply your skills, your talents, your ideals, you made the choice to apply them here, in this school and in this wonderful profession of ours. You made the choice to truly live your motto and to ‘champion what matters,'” she told the graduates. “You are the ones who say ‘I want to make a difference.'”

The Attorney General began her address by recognizing Dean Claudio Grossman for his service to the law school and university, saying he has “transformed this law school” and “shaped the lives of thousands of WCL students – students who have gone on to improve countless lives themselves by practicing the law they learned here. That is an impressive and immeasurable legacy, and I could not be prouder to be a part of your final set of commencement exercises as dean of the Washington College of Law.”

Dean Claudio Grossman took the opportunity to thank his colleagues and the students and alumni he has known and worked with other the past two decades.

“After 21 years as Dean, it is important to me personally to say that I am proud to have worked alongside all of you, colleagues, students and graduates, to help shape a better world for all of us,” he said “During my tenure at WCL, you have given me opportunities to work toward these goals that I did not imagine as a political refugee from Chile, and for that I am forever grateful to you.”
