Anti-Corruption Program Director Participates in a Panel on Fighting Corruption

Nancy Boswell '87 with co-panelists

On October 29, 2015, Nancy Boswell ‘87, director of U.S. & International Anti-Corruption Law Summer Program at American University Washington College of Law, spoke on the anti-corruption panel hosted by the American Society of International Law.

The panel, titled “Fighting Corruption: Efforts by Switzerland and the United States to Recover Stolen Assets” underscored the importance of repatriating stolen assets to their country of origin for use in development and as a deterrent to those who might steal in the future.

Boswell, who brings executive experience in the field of preventing and combatting corruption, was joined by Ambassador Valentin Zellweger, director and legal adviser, Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Daniel Claman, assistant deputy chief, Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice.

While the panelists noted continued technical and financial challenges, they emphasized considerable progress, particularly in legal cooperation.  Switzerland and the United States are the most active governments repatriating assets.
