On October 17, American University Librarian Nancy Davenport and Washington College of Law Associate Dean of Library & Information Resources and Professor of Law Billie Jo Kaufman hosted a reception in honor of the new Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who was sworn into office on September 14, 2016.

AU President Neil Kerwin, his wife Ann Kerwin, and Provost Scott Bass along with Washington, D.C. area academic and law librarians celebrated Dr. Hayden’s appointment as the 14th Librarian of Congress.

Hayden, the first woman and first African American to lead the national library, was nominated to the position by President Obama on February 24, 2016, and her nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 13. The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library, offering access to the creative record of the United States—and extensive materials from around the world—both on site and online. It is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office.
