October 27- 31 is Wellness Week at American University Washington College of Law. This weeklong initiative is coordinated by the Office of Student Affairs, and connects law students, and even faculty and staff with activities that promote healthy living.

The Wellness Week lineup includes free massages, spine and posture consultations, healthy snack samples, cooking demonstrations, flu vaccinations for students and staff, and more.

“There are stressors that are new to a lot of students when they come to law school, particularly for first year students as they are transitioning into law school,” said David Jaffe, associate dean of students, American University Washington College of Law. “Despite students having what seems to be less time while they are in school, they still need to be making time for and taking care of themselves.”

The Office of Student Affairs coordinates year-round wellness opportunities for students in addition to the many services provided by the University—from yoga and meditation to workshops on resiliency and positive psychology. Wellness Week complements those activities, potentially introducing students to a new hobby or reminding them of stress-relieving activities they might have enjoyed prior to law school.

“Students should be living happy and healthy lives while they are in school,” said Jaffe. “They do have less time to focus on the things that will best take care of them, so our effort is to give them back those opportunities and remind them that they have life of outside of law school.”
