Third Annual Jaszi Distinguished Lecture on Intellectual Property Welcomes CopyrightX Creator William Fisher

The third annual Peter Jaszi Distinguished Lecture on Intellectual Property was held on Oct. 30 at American University Washington College of Law. Hosted by the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property, the lecture is named in recognition of the contributions of Professor Peter Jaszi to the study of intellectual property and for his lasting contributions to the elevation of the public interest as the paramount concern of the law.

William Fisher

This year's lecture, "CopyrightX: Lessons from Networked Legal Education," was delivered by Harvard Law School Professor William Fisher. Fisher is the creator and supervisor of CopyrightX, a combination of traditional and online courses meant to enhance the experience of learning about copyright for law students and others around the world.

CopyrightX has three components—a residential copyright class at Harvard Law School, an online course taught by 20 Harvard Law School teaching fellows, and an affiliated course offered at different colleges and universities throughout the world.

Fisher hopes that he is able to make high-quality education concerning copyright law more widely available and cultivate a wise practice of copyright among both students and non-lawyers.

“I'm trying to encourage people in general, but certainly the participants in the course, to approach and practice copyright in a certain spirit...That spirit begins with recognition that copyright is a tool--it’s not an end in itself--it is a tool to advance other goals."
